TINUBU DEPLOYS ARMY BATTALION TO KWARA AFTER DEADLY TERROR ATTACK CLAIMS 75 LIVES

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate deployment of an army battalion to Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State following a deadly terrorist attack that left at least 75 people dead, authorities have confirmed.

The deployment, announced on Wednesday, is part of a new security operation code-named Operation Savannah Shield, aimed at restoring stability and preventing further attacks in affected communities.

The assault occurred late Tuesday in Woro and Nuku communities, where armed extremists reportedly targeted residents during a coordinated attack. Homes and other properties were destroyed, while several villagers fled into surrounding areas for safety.

In a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu strongly condemned the killings, describing the attack as a brutal assault on defenceless civilians.

The statement said the President directed the Nigerian Army to establish a reinforced military presence in Kaiama to secure communities and disrupt the activities of terrorist groups operating in the area.

According to the presidency, the attackers targeted residents who reportedly resisted pressure to abandon their established religious practices. The President commended the affected communities for rejecting violent extremism and urged security agencies to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

Tinubu also directed federal and state authorities to provide humanitarian support to displaced residents and families affected by the violence.

Meanwhile, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who visited the area alongside security officials, described the attack as a deliberate massacre carried out in response to ongoing counterterrorism operations in the region.

Speaking during a visit to the palace of the Emir of Kaiama, the governor said the victims were targeted for refusing to submit to extremist ideology. He assured residents that security operations would be intensified to prevent a recurrence.

The incident ranks among the deadliest attacks recorded in Kwara State in recent years and has heightened concerns about the expansion of extremist violence into Nigeria’s north-central region.

Kwara State shares a border with Niger State, an area that has experienced increased activity by armed groups. Security agencies say operations are ongoing to stabilise border communities and dismantle militant networks.
