TINUBU URGES PEACE, RESTRAINT AS FCT, KANO, RIVERS HEAD TO POLLS

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for orderliness and professionalism from voters, security agencies, and electoral officials ahead of scheduled elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kano State, and Rivers State.

In a statement issued on February 20, 2026, by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President emphasised the need for calm, tolerance, and respect for democratic principles during Saturday’s polls.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to conduct elections across the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory. The Commission will also oversee bye-elections in Ahoada East II and Khana II State constituencies in Rivers State, as well as Kano Municipal and Ungogo constituencies in Kano State.

President Tinubu urged eligible voters to participate in the electoral process without fear, noting that democracy flourishes best in an atmosphere of peace and mutual respect. He called on political parties, candidates, and their supporters to avoid violence, inflammatory rhetoric, and any conduct capable of undermining the credibility of the elections.

The President also directed security agencies to exercise restraint and professionalism in the discharge of their duties. He cautioned against high-handedness, intimidation, or actions that could disenfranchise voters or erode public trust, stressing that security personnel are deployed to safeguard lives, property, and the integrity of the electoral process.

Furthermore, he urged INEC to strengthen voter confidence by ensuring timely accreditation, seamless voting procedures, accurate collation, and prompt transmission of results in accordance with the 2026 Electoral Act.

The President reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting institutions responsible for delivering free, fair, and credible elections, expressing confidence that the polls would reflect the will of the people and contribute to the consolidation of Nigeria’s democratic journey.
