TOP EFCC PROSECUTOR SUSPENDED OVER ALLEGED BRIBERY, SABOTAGE OF CORRUPTION CASES

A senior prosecutor with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Samuel Chime, has been suspended from duty following allegations of bribery and deliberate sabotage of high-profile corruption cases.

Credible sources within the anti-graft agency confirmed that the suspension followed an internal investigation triggered by complaints alleging that the prosecutor compromised sensitive cases in exchange for financial inducements from suspects under investigation.

According to the sources, Chime, who is regarded as one of the EFCC’s experienced legal officers, is accused of engaging in conduct inconsistent with the commission’s code of ethics, including allegedly frustrating prosecutions through procedural lapses and deliberate delays.

The EFCC management was said to have approved his suspension to allow for an unhindered probe into the allegations, in line with the agency’s internal disciplinary procedures.

Although the commission has not yet issued an official public statement detailing the allegations, officials familiar with the matter said the suspension reflects the EFCC leadership’s commitment to internal accountability and institutional integrity.

The allegations reportedly involve cases of significant public interest, raising concerns about the credibility of ongoing prosecutions and the wider fight against corruption.

Legal analysts note that prosecutors play a critical role in the success of corruption cases and that any compromise at that level could undermine public confidence in the justice system.

An EFCC source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, said the commission is determined to ensure that no official, regardless of rank, is shielded from scrutiny.

“The commission cannot afford to tolerate internal actions that weaken its mandate. Anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law,” the source said.

The suspension comes amid renewed public calls for transparency within anti-corruption agencies, as well as demands that allegations against enforcement officials be thoroughly investigated and publicly addressed.

If found guilty, Chime could face internal sanctions, dismissal, and possible criminal prosecution, depending on the outcome of the investigation.

The development underscores the EFCC’s stated position that the anti-corruption fight must begin from within, even as the agency continues its prosecution of financial crimes across the country.
