UK PARENTS AWARDED £858,000 AFTER DAUGHTER DIES FOLLOWING WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY IN TURKEY

Parents Toyin and Oyebanji Ashamu have been awarded £858,000 in compensation following the death of their 26-year-old daughter, Khelisyah Ashamu, days after undergoing a weight-loss surgery procedure in Turkey.
Khelisyah, an IT professional and mother of one from Romford, United Kingdom, travelled to Izmir in February 2019 to undergo a gastric bypass surgery. She reportedly sought the procedure due to longstanding weight concerns and post-Caesarean abdominal issues.
The surgery was arranged through Get Slim in Turkey, a British-run medical tourism company, at a total cost of around £3,300, which covered both the operation and accommodation.
Eight days after the initial surgery, Khelisyah’s condition deteriorated, leading to a follow-up exploratory operation. She suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away on 9th February, 2019, in a Turkish hospital. A coroner later determined that the cause of death was gastrointestinal ischaemia, a lack of blood flow to the intestines resulting from surgical complications.
The Ashamus subsequently filed a lawsuit against Tracey Ozdemir, the operator of Get Slim, claiming the company bore responsibility for their daughter’s death. While the operator denied liability, the court ruled in favour of the family.
Court proceedings revealed that post-operative care and monitoring were inadequate following the second surgery. Mrs Justice Obi confirmed that Khelisyah had entered into a package travel contract, which made the company responsible for not just travel and accommodation, but also for the surgery and post-operative care.
Addressing the Ashamus, Justice Obi stated:
“I recognise how difficult these proceedings must have been for you and I offer my sincere condolences for the loss of your daughter. Nothing this court can do can lessen that loss, but I hope the conclusion of these proceedings will bring some measure of consolation.”
The court ultimately awarded the family £858,000, highlighting that the medical tourism package provided by Get Slim included all aspects of the patient’s journey, from surgery to accommodation.
