UK TO PHASE OUT PAPER VISAS, INTRODUCE ELECTRONIC eVISAS FROM FEBRUARY 25

The United Kingdom will replace physical visa documents with electronic visas (eVisas) starting February 25, 2026, the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) announced on Friday.

Travellers who require a visa to enter the UK will now receive a digital record accessible via a UKVI account before travel. The eVisa will include details such as the type of visa issued, immigration status, and conditions of stay, including work or study permissions.

“From 25 February 2026, visitors to the UK who need a visa will get an eVisa only. Create your UKVI account and view your eVisa before travelling to the UK,” the agency stated.

The eVisa system replaces paper-based immigration documents, including biometric residence permits (BRPs), biometric residence cards (BRCs), and wet ink passport stamps or vignettes. Travellers typically receive their eVisa upon a successful visa application and can share a digital code to verify their status for employment, housing, or other purposes.

Users must have a UKVI account to access their eVisa. Setting up an account is free and does not require payment to view the digital visa. Travellers are advised to link their passport or travel document details before departure.

The move aligns with the UK government’s ongoing digitalisation of immigration processes, intended to simplify visa management, enhance security, and reduce reliance on physical documentation.
