Lagos Truck Driver Arrested After Cyclist Dies in Ikeja Accident

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested a truck driver following the death of a cyclist under the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital bridge in Ikeja.

The crash occurred at the traffic signal corridor inward Airport Road, involving a DAF articulated truck and the cyclist approaching the roundabout from the Maryland axis. Preliminary findings indicated that the cyclist attempted to navigate the roundabout beside the truck but failed to maintain a safe distance, resulting in a fatal collision. The victim reportedly died on the spot.

LASTMA officers stationed nearby quickly responded and intercepted the truck driver, who allegedly attempted to flee the scene.

“The cyclist was unable to maintain a safe clearance from the moving truck, resulting in a fatal crash. Our officers swiftly apprehended the driver when he attempted to abscond,” said LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq.

The suspect has been handed over to the Ikeja Police Division for further investigation and potential prosecution.

Government urges caution

Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and urged cyclists and commercial motorcyclists to exercise caution.

“The Lagos State Government continues sensitisation campaigns to educate cyclists and other vulnerable road users on limiting movement to inner roads and avoiding highways and high-risk corridors,” Giwa said. He added that the advisory also extends to skateboard users and other non-motorised road users.

LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to road safety enforcement, urging motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to obey traffic rules to prevent avoidable accidents.
