MAKINDE PLEDGES STRONGER POLITICAL, BUDGETARY BACKING TO END GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE IN OYO

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to intensifying efforts to prevent and address gender-based violence (GBV) in the state, pledging political leadership, budgetary support, and executive backing for relevant legislation.

The governor made the commitment on Thursday while receiving representatives of the Nigerian Governors’ Spouses Forum, in partnership with the Ford Foundation. The delegation, led by the First Lady of Oyo State and Vice Chairperson of the Forum, Tamunominini Makinde, paid a courtesy visit to his office in Ibadan.

According to a statement issued by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, the visit was themed “Advocacy for Prevention: Shifting Social Norms and Strengthening State Commitment to End Gender-Based Violence.”

Speaking during the meeting, Makinde assured the delegation that his administration would collaborate with the Oyo State House of Assembly to ensure adequate budgetary allocations for GBV prevention and response mechanisms.

“I believe strongly in preventing sexual and gender-based violence,” the governor said. “For millions of young girls and women in our state, I assure you that this administration has the political will to support the aspirations of the Nigerian government and the Ford Foundation on GBV prevention.”

He further stated that Oyo State would provide the necessary political leadership to drive the campaign against GBV and strengthen institutional frameworks designed to protect vulnerable groups.

Makinde also pledged to assent to any legislation passed by the State House of Assembly aimed at curbing sexual and gender-based violence.

“Any bill passed by the state House of Assembly in support of preventing sexual and gender-based violence in the state, I will sign. You can be assured of executive backing for appropriate laws to achieve the objectives of this advocacy,” he said.

Earlier, Tamunominini Makinde emphasised the need for sustained commitment to tackling GBV, describing it as not only a social concern but also a development and governance challenge with economic implications.

She called on the state government to prioritise GBV prevention by ensuring consistent funding and effective implementation of relevant laws, including the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law and the Child Rights Law.

According to her, the advocacy visit forms part of a broader initiative by the Nigerian Governors’ Spouses Forum, in partnership with the Ford Foundation, aimed at strengthening legislative ownership and institutional response to GBV prevention in Oyo State.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary to the State Government, Musibau Babatunde; the Head of Service, Olubunmi Oni; members of the Oyo State House of Assembly; commissioners; and other senior government officials.

The renewed commitment comes amid ongoing national and subnational efforts to address gender-based violence through policy reforms, public awareness campaigns, and strengthened legal frameworks.
