MURIC CALLS ON FG TO CLARIFY US MILITARY PRESENCE IN NIGERIA
6th February, 2026
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to provide clarity on reports of United States troops operating within the country, citing concerns over national sovereignty and the safety of Muslim leaders.
In a statement released on Friday, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, Executive Director of MURIC, described the secrecy surrounding the alleged deployment as “disturbing” and called for transparency regarding the scope, purpose, and funding of any foreign military presence in Nigeria.
While welcoming international cooperation in the fight against terrorism, Prof. Akintola warned against presenting insecurity as a religiously one-sided issue.
“We assert that there is nothing like Christian genocide in Nigeria. What we have is terrorism, insecurity, and religious persecution affecting both Christians and Muslims. What we lack is religious tolerance,” he said.
MURIC also raised concerns about selective international intervention, noting that Muslims in southern Nigeria have historically faced discrimination. The group stressed that any foreign military presence should promote freedom and protection for all Nigerians, regardless of religion.
The organisation questioned the government’s description of the reported deployment as a “small team,” asking:
“How ‘small’ is ‘small’? Nigerians deserve to know the scope, purpose, and funding of this operation.”
Prof. Akintola also called on the National Assembly, civil society groups, labour unions, and student bodies to seek accountability and engage in public discourse on the matter, warning that silence in the face of perceived injustice “deepens division and mistrust.”
MURIC emphasized that no Muslim leader should face threats, disappearances, or attacks, and urged the authorities to ensure religious leaders can operate without fear while the alleged US troop presence is clarified.
