AIYEDATIWA FLAGS OFF RELIEF DISTRIBUTION TO OCEAN SURGE VICTIMS IN ILAJE COMMUNITIES
The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and supporting vulnerable residents as relief materials were officially unveiled and distributed to communities affected by a recent ocean surge in Ilaje Local Government Area.
The intervention, coordinated through the Ondo State Emergency Management Agency (ODSEMA), followed the governor’s directive for a prompt and structured emergency response aimed at providing immediate assistance to impacted households.
Communities covered in the first phase of distribution include Ayetoro, Agerige, Ogogoro, Obe Nla, Obe Adu and Abereke. These riverine settlements reportedly suffered varying degrees of damage resulting from sea incursion, rainstorms, fire outbreaks and related natural disasters.
Officials stated that the relief materials distributed comprised mattresses, bags of rice and vegetable oil. The items were packaged to cushion the hardship faced by affected families and help restore a measure of stability to their homes.
Speaking at the event, the Administrative Secretary in the Office of the Deputy Governor, Mr. Frederick Orunko, said the distribution was carried out in compliance with Governor Aiyedatiwa’s directive and under the supervision of the Deputy Governor, Dr. Olayide Adelami, who serves as Chairman of ODSEMA. He added that the exercise would continue in batches, with additional supplies being arranged for other affected communities across the state.
The Special Assistant to the Governor on Emergency Response, Hon. Wellington Oriade Adebawo, noted that beyond immediate palliative measures, the state government is exploring sustainable and long-term solutions to address the recurring challenge of sea incursion in Ilaje and other vulnerable coastal communities.
Representing the Ilaje Local Government Chairman, Hon. Emmanuel Ojagbaletiwon expressed appreciation to the state government for the timely intervention. He explained that the council chairman was unavoidably absent due to official engagements and reaffirmed the local government’s readiness to collaborate with the state in alleviating hardship in affected communities.
Community leaders who spoke at the event commended the swift response, describing the distribution of relief materials as a demonstration of responsive governance during emergencies.
Also present were the Director of Finance and Administration of ODSEMA, Mr. Richard Aina; the agency’s Desk Officer, Mr. Ayesa Kehinde; as well as other government officials and community stakeholders.
