NEWS UPDATE: ATIKU CALLS ON INEC TO REVIEW 2027 ELECTION DATE OVER RAMADAN TIMING

ATIKU CALLS ON INEC TO REVIEW 2027 ELECTION DATE OVER RAMADAN TIMING

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has  the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reconsider the February 20, 2027 date announced for the next presidential election, citing concerns over its overlap with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

INEC had earlier scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections are slated for March 6, 2027. The commission also fixed May 22 to June 20, 2026, for political party primaries.

In a statement shared on his verified social media platform, Atiku noted that the proposed February 20 date falls within the Ramadan period, projected to run from February 7 to March 8, 2027.

He described Ramadan as a sacred season of fasting, reflection, and spiritual devotion for millions of Nigerian Muslims, adding that elections require extensive participation and physical endurance.

“Elections are not mere administrative rituals; they are national exercises that demand maximum participation, physical endurance, and collective focus,” Atiku stated.

He argued that conducting a nationwide civic exercise during a major religious observance could affect voter turnout and engagement, particularly in a country with a large Muslim population.

According to him, inclusive planning is essential in a diverse society such as Nigeria. He said selecting an election date that accommodates the country’s religious and cultural realities demonstrates competence and sensitivity.

“In a diverse country like Nigeria, inclusive planning is not optional; it is fundamental. Something as basic as choosing a broadly acceptable date should not be mishandled,” he added.

Atiku further questioned the electoral body’s preparedness, stating that Nigerians would expect clear assurances of its ability to conduct free, fair, and credible elections in 2027.

As of press time, INEC had not issued an official response to the concerns raised.

The 2027 general elections are expected to be a major political event in Nigeria, with political parties preparing for primaries and strategic alignments ahead of the polls.
