FG Announces Six-Week Partial Closure of Lagos–Ibadan Expressway for Urgent Bridge Repairs
6TH FEBRUARY, 2026 | LAGOS – The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Works, has announced a six-week partial closure of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway to carry out urgent repairs on expansion joints at Kara Bridge, Magboro Bridge, and Arepo–Punch Bridge.
The closure is necessary to resume critical rehabilitation works on the Lagos-bound section of Kara Bridge, which had been previously suspended due to public complaints about traffic congestion.
Ogun State Federal Controller of Works, Michael Komolafe, apologised to motorists for the inconvenience and assured that enhanced traffic management measures would be implemented to ensure both swift repairs and road safety. He explained that the bridges’ expansion joints had deteriorated significantly, posing safety risks and contributing to road accidents.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, directed that urgent repairs be carried out immediately. According to Andy Duan, General Manager of CBC Construction Company, work on half of the Lagos-bound sections of Magboro and Arepo–Punch bridges is already completed, with the remaining portions on the Ibadan-bound side scheduled for repair.
“We expect to complete half of each expansion joint within a week. For the Ibadan-bound side, covering three bridges, the work will be divided into phases so each bridge takes about a week,” Duan said.
Traffic safety measures including barriers, warning lights, and clear signage will be installed before work begins, ensuring smooth flow of vehicles and protection for workers.
Kehinde Hamzat, Lagos State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), assured motorists of measures to maintain smooth traffic movement and warned that drivers violating traffic rules during the closure will be sanctioned. He emphasized that the closure is a necessary step to enhance road safety and infrastructure longevity.
Motorists are advised to plan their trips accordingly and cooperate with traffic management personnel during the six-week construction period.
