IDANRE COMMUNITY DEMANDS INDEPENDENT PROBE INTO APC WARD CONGRESS VIOLENCE

Residents of Idanre Local Government Area in Ondo State have called for an independent investigation into the violence that erupted during last Wednesday’s ward congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which reportedly left two people dead and several others injured.

The community appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ondo State Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa and relevant security agencies to ensure a thorough and impartial probe into the incident.

According to reports from the area, political thugs disrupted the congress, resulting in fatalities and multiple injuries. Raphael Adetimehin, brother of the Ondo State APC Chairman, Mr Ade Adetimehin, was also reportedly attacked during the unrest.

In a letter addressed to the President and titled “A Clarion Call to End the Senseless Killings of Idanre Citizens,” the traditional ruler, High Chief Akinloye Akinboni, urged authorities to constitute an unbiased and independent investigative panel to identify and prosecute those responsible.

The letter described the incident as tragic and unacceptable, stating that the violence was an affront to the peace and unity of Idanre Kingdom. It noted that several injured persons were still receiving medical treatment.

The community maintained that while its people are law-abiding and peace-loving, they would not remain silent in the face of continued violence. The statement added that the kingdom reserves the right to engage independent private investigators to complement official efforts if necessary.

The traditional ruler further warned that if decisive steps are not taken to halt recurring violence and restore peace, the community may explore legal options and alternative democratic platforms to ensure effective representation at the National Assembly.

“It is not a threat against the APC in Idanre,” the letter clarified, “but a responsible call on the ruling party and all relevant authorities to act swiftly and justly.”

Meanwhile, the Ondo State Police Command confirmed the arrest of 13 suspects in connection with the attack. The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, stated that the arrests followed a coordinated, intelligence-led operation ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal.

The police assured residents that investigations are ongoing and that anyone found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The incident has heightened concerns over political violence in the build-up to future electoral activities, with stakeholders calling for restraint and strengthened security measures to prevent further loss of lives.
