INEC ANNOUNCES FEBRUARY 20, 2027 AS DATE FOR PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially scheduled Nigeria’s next Presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027.
The announcement was made on Friday in Abuja by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, during a press briefing where the commission unveiled its timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections.
According to the commission, governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will follow two weeks later, on March 6, 2027.
INEC explained that it had earlier completed work on the election timetable and forwarded the schedule to the National Assembly. The commission, however, noted that certain aspects of the schedule could be adjusted depending on the eventual passage of the amended Electoral Act currently under consideration by lawmakers.
The electoral body had on February 4 indicated that preparations for the 2027 polls were progressing as planned, despite concerns over delays in legislative amendments to the Electoral Act. INEC reassured stakeholders that it remains committed to conducting free, fair, and credible elections within the constitutional timeframe.
The commission is expected to release further guidelines and detailed timelines for party primaries, voter registration updates, and other pre-election activities in due course.
The 2027 general elections will mark another major democratic milestone for Africa’s most populous nation, as political parties and aspirants begin early preparations ahead of the polls.
