TINUBU DIRECTS FERMA TO EMBRACE PREVENTIVE, EVIDENCE-BASED ROAD MAINTENANCE
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has instructed the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to adopt a preventive, planned, and data-driven approach to road maintenance as part of renewed efforts to improve the durability and performance of Nigeria’s federal road network.
The directive was issued on Tuesday in Abuja at the 2026 Roads Summit, themed “Sustainable Road Infrastructure for National Growth.” The President was represented at the event by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
According to the President, the era of reactive and emergency road repairs must give way to a structured and sustainable maintenance framework guided by accurate data and coordinated institutional action.
As part of the new strategy, Tinubu mandated FERMA to establish a comprehensive, geo-referenced national database documenting failed and deteriorating federal roads nationwide. The database is expected to capture the root causes of road failures, including design deficiencies, substandard construction, excessive axle loading, drainage problems, climate-related factors, and maintenance shortcomings.
He stressed that systematic road condition audits and effective data management are critical to understanding the actual state of national road assets and planning long-term interventions.
Tinubu noted that reliable road data would enable Nigeria to transition from emergency-driven repairs to predictive and preventive maintenance planning, improving budget accuracy, intervention prioritisation, and contractor accountability. He added that such a database would also support research collaboration with institutions like the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute and align Nigeria with global best practices in road asset management.
While acknowledging ongoing investments in road construction under his administration, the President said infrastructure development must go beyond building new roads to ensuring that existing ones are properly preserved.
“Sustainable road maintenance is a necessity, not an option. Without it, today’s investments risk becoming long-term liabilities,” he said.
The President also called on FERMA to strengthen collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works and intensify routine road condition audits, safety assessments, and post-failure evaluations across the federal road network.
Speaking at the summit, the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, said road transport remains Nigeria’s dominant mode of transportation, accounting for more than 90 per cent of passenger and freight movement.
