N-POWER BENEFICIARIES PROTEST AT NASS, FINANCE MINISTRY OVER MONTHS OF UNPAID STIPENDS

Beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s N-Power youth empowerment programme on Wednesday staged peaceful protests at the National Assembly Complex and the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja over the prolonged non-payment of their monthly stipends.

The protesters, operating under the banner of the National Association of N-Power Beneficiaries, said they had not been paid for periods ranging from nine to twelve months, despite continued engagement with relevant authorities.

Carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Pay N-Power Beneficiaries,” “They Worked, Pay Them,” and “Renewed Hope or Recycled Neglect?”, the demonstrators accused the Federal Government of failing to honour its financial obligations to thousands of Nigerian youths enrolled in the programme.

In a statement issued during the protest, the association said the extended delay in stipend payments had exposed beneficiaries across the country to severe financial hardship, emotional strain, and loss of dignity—conditions they said contradict the objectives of the youth empowerment initiative.

According to the protesters, beneficiaries have continued to show patience and professionalism despite repeated assurances, yet their entitlements remain unpaid.

They noted that the situation has negatively affected the welfare and livelihoods of many participants who rely on the programme as a primary source of income.

The association called on the National Assembly, the Federal Ministry of Finance, and other relevant agencies to take immediate steps to address the backlog of unpaid stipends, ensure accountability, and provide clear communication on the current status and future direction of the N-Power programme.

While reiterating their commitment to peaceful and lawful engagement, the protesters warned that continued silence or inaction from authorities could lead to sustained advocacy actions.

The issue of unpaid stipends has remained a recurring challenge for N-Power beneficiaries since the programme was launched under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, with several rounds of protests recorded over the years.

In 2025, aggrieved beneficiaries instituted a legal action at the National Industrial Court in Abuja against the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, seeking the payment of outstanding stipends and related entitlements.

The suit named the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Accountant-General of the Federation, and the National Programme Manager of N-Power as defendants.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the Federal Government on the latest protest.
