NIMC TO START WARD-LEVEL NIN ENROLMENT ACROSS NIGERIA FROM FEBRUARY 16

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced the commencement of ward-level enrolment for the National Identification Number (NIN) nationwide, starting Monday, February 16, 2026. The initiative is part of efforts to expand access to identity services and promote inclusive registration across the country.

In a statement on Wednesday, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, said the rollout follows a presidential directive mandating the commission to take NIN enrolment to the grassroots.

“In line with the presidential directive, the NIMC wishes to announce that registration and enrolment for issuance of the NIN at wards nationwide will commence on Monday, February 16th, 2026,” the statement read.

The commission highlighted that the exercise will target both Nigerian citizens and legal residents, including children and adults, ensuring comprehensive registration in the National Identity Database.

“This nationwide exercise is designed to ensure the comprehensive registration of every Nigerian citizen and legal resident, including children and adults, into the National Identity Database,” NIMC noted.

The enrolment process will be free of charge, supporting the Federal Government’s drive to promote inclusive governance and national development.

“The enrollment will be conducted free of charge, in furtherance of the Federal Government’s renewed hope agenda, aimed at promoting inclusive governance, national development, and access to identity services,” the commission added.

The ward-level initiative aims to decentralize identity services, reducing travel burdens for citizens who previously had to visit designated enrolment centres. NIMC has engaged state governments, local authorities, traditional rulers, community leaders, market associations, and faith-based organisations to ensure a smooth implementation.

Members of the public are encouraged to mobilise their families and communities to participate. NIMC has promised to release enrolment schedules guiding the rotational movement of licensed front-end partners and their staff on its official website.

The commission also noted that as of July 2025, over 122 million Nigerians had registered for the NIN, marking a 49% increase from 72.7 million in January 2022. NIMC further highlighted that incidents of extortion and unofficial charges during enrolment had dropped by over 40 per cent.

Nigerians and legal residents who have not yet obtained their NIN are urged to take advantage of the upcoming ward-level enrolment to secure their identification.
