OGUN STATE LEADERS BID FAREWELL TO MAMA LUCIA ONABANJO

Ijebu Ode, Ogun State – February 13, 2026 – Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and former state governors joined family, dignitaries, and church officials to honour the late Madam Lucia Onabanjo, wife of the first civilian governor of Ogun State, Late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, at her funeral mass held on Friday at St. Sebastian Catholic Cathedral, Ijebu Ode.

Governor Abiodun described Madam Onabanjo as a woman of quiet service, strong moral values, and unwavering family support, which he said contributed to sustaining public leadership in the state. He also pledged the state government’s support for the completion of the cathedral project in her honour.

“Mama Onabanjo’s life reflected the vital role women play in shaping society through moral guidance, resilience, and quiet leadership at home and beyond,” Abiodun said. He added that the former first lady lived a simple, disciplined life, earning respect through her humility, faith, and ethical standards rather than public attention.

The funeral service saw the attendance of three former governors: Chief Olusegun Osoba, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, currently representing Ogun East in the Senate, and Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

The governor highlighted Madam Onabanjo’s devotion as a wife and mother, noting that she remained steadfast beside her husband during challenging political periods, including his detention following the 1983 military coup.

Earlier in his homily, Reverend Father Mary Odunsi described Madam Onabanjo as a silent achiever, whose quiet contributions to her family, the church, and society will continue to inspire generations.

Madam Lucia Onabanjo passed away at the age of 100 on January 11, 2026. Her husband, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, served as Ogun State’s first civilian governor from 1979 to 1983 and was a prominent journalist, widely recognised for his weekly column, Ayekooto, until his death in 1990.
