The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 40-year-old woman, Nafisat Lateef, over the alleged poisoning of a three-year-old boy in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.
Police confirmed that the incident was reported on Wednesday, February 5, 2026, at the Odigbo Police Division by the child’s mother, Rofiyat, aged 32. Both the complainant and the suspect are residents of Omifon community in Odigbo.
According to preliminary investigations, the incident occurred on Tuesday, February 4, 2026, at about 8:30 a.m., when the suspect allegedly gave the child, identified as Abdulrasheed, a liquid substance suspected to be poisonous.
Police sources said the alleged act followed a misunderstanding between the child’s mother and the suspect, who is reportedly her landlady.
Shortly after ingesting the substance, the child reportedly began vomiting and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he received medical attention. The police said the child is currently responding to treatment.
Detectives from the command, acting on intelligence, arrested the suspect and recovered the liquid substance believed to have been administered to the child. The suspect is presently in police custody and has made statements to investigators.
The Ondo State Police Command said investigations are ongoing and that the case will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the probe.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Adebowale Lawal, has cautioned residents against allowing landlord–tenant disputes and other domestic disagreements to escalate into criminal acts. He urged members of the public to embrace peaceful coexistence and lawful conflict resolution.
The police boss also reassured residents of the command’s readiness to respond promptly to complaints, stressing its commitment to justice, crime prevention, and the protection of lives and property across Ondo State.
The command further appealed to the public to continue supporting the police with timely and credible information that could aid effective policing and enhance public safety.
