ONDO SOUTH SENATE SEAT: TOP CONTENDERS EMERGE, JANET ADEYEMI LEADS THE PACK

Political activities in Ondo South Senatorial District have intensified following strong indications that the seat currently held by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim may soon become vacant due to his ambassadorial appointment.

Although the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has yet to formally declare the seat vacant or schedule a bye-election, party consultations—particularly within the All Progressives Congress (APC)—have intensified, with several prominent figures emerging as potential contenders.

Key Contenders

Among those in the spotlight is Rt. Hon. Mayowa Akinfolarin, a two-term Member of the House of Representatives and former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly. His extensive legislative experience at both state and federal levels, coupled with deep grassroots connections, makes him a notable figure in the race.

Also in contention is Hon. Mrs. Oladunni Odu, a seasoned administrator and politician. She previously served as Secretary to the State Government (SSG) under the late Governor Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu and has held several political and advisory roles in Ondo State.

Her executive experience and knowledge of state governance are widely regarded as significant assets.

Mathew Oyerinmade (MATO) has also been mentioned as a prospective contender. A recognised mobiliser with strong ties to youth and community structures, MATO is well-known for his grassroots influence across the district.

Janet Adeyemi: A Proven Leader - While all the names above carry weight, Engr. (Mrs.) Janet Febisola Adeyemi stands out as a candidate uniquely positioned for the demands of the Senate.

Adeyemi is a former Member of the House of Representatives, having served between 1999 and 2003, representing Ile Oluji/Okeigbo and Odigbo Federal Constituency during the formative years of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. Her tenure gave her first-hand experience in federal lawmaking, committee work, oversight functions, and constituency representation at a critical period in the nation’s democratic evolution.

Beyond her legislative experience, Adeyemi is a renowned expert in natural resources and mining, serving as President of Women in Mining in Nigeria, an affiliate of the International Women in Mining. She has been a strong advocate for the development of Nigeria’s critical minerals sector, which is essential for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and economic growth.

Her expertise positions her as an invaluable asset not just to Ondo State but to national development.

Her career reflects a combination of technical competence, policy insight, and practical governance experience, complemented by a strong commitment to gender inclusion, youth empowerment, and sustainable development. Stakeholders also commend her resilience, discipline, and integrity, qualities that have defined her public and private life.

A senior APC source observed: “When competence, experience, and readiness are considered together, Janet Adeyemi’s profile aligns perfectly with the requirements of the Senate.

As consultations continue, the contest for the Ondo South senatorial seat is shaping around experience, credibility, and capacity for effective representation. While each aspirant brings unique strengths, political analysts and party insiders increasingly regard Janet Adeyemi’s combination of legislative experience, technical expertise in natural resources, and proven leadership as the strongest among them.
