OYO GOVERNMENT CONFERS JUSTICE OF THE PEACE TITLES ON 345, WARNS AGAINST MISUSE
The Oyo State Government has conferred the title of Justice of the Peace (JP) on 345 individuals, urging recipients to regard the honour as a call to responsible service rather than a ceremonial status.
The conferment ceremony was held on Thursday at the House of Chiefs, Parliament Building, Secretariat, Ibadan.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Lawal, emphasised that the title carries constitutional backing and must be exercised with integrity and caution. He warned that the honour could be withdrawn if abused.
“To be singled out as one of the recipients for the conferment shows that you are regarded as a person of peace with a clean record and no association with crime,” Lawal said. “I urge you to take the title seriously, as it has its source in the constitution. Discharge your duties responsibly.”
He advised the newly appointed JPs to verify documents thoroughly before administering oaths or endorsing official papers, stressing the importance of avoiding illegal documentation. He further cautioned against turning the position into a commercial venture.
“This award is withdrawable. Study the booklet on the conferment carefully and ensure you do not infringe on the guidelines,” he added.
The Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the state, Abiodun Aikomo, also addressed the recipients, noting that the office of Justice of the Peace represents a significant responsibility in promoting justice and fairness at the grassroots level.
“The title ‘Justice of the Peace’ is not a decorative badge of social status; it is a functional tool for social engineering,” Aikomo said. He added that the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde remains committed to upholding the rule of law under its Omituntun 2.0 agenda.
He stressed that JPs must exercise their authority with humility and integrity, warning that the government maintains zero tolerance for abuse of office. “A JP must never become a local tyrant,” he said.
According to him, JPs play a critical role in mediating community disputes, certifying documents, and supporting the justice system at the grassroots level. Without fairness and diligence in these functions, he noted, the broader legal framework would be weakened.
Representing the Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Adedeji Ishola, officials reiterated that the office demands strict adherence to established principles and guidelines.
Delivering an enlightenment lecture on the responsibilities attached to the role, Professor Adeniyi Olatunbosun described the office as an emblem of peace and a moral anchor within society.
In her vote of thanks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Olubunmi Oluwatoyin, expressed appreciation to the state government, the judiciary, and stakeholders for their support in organising the event.
