PDP NEC MEETING: CARETAKER COMMITTEE REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO RULE OF LAW, UNITY AHEAD OF NATIONAL CONVENTION
The National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed the party’s commitment to constitutionalism, internal democracy, and unity, following recent judicial developments affecting its leadership structure.
This was disclosed on Tuesday, February 2, 2026, during the 105th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party, held in Abuja, where the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee, Alhaji Abdulrahman Muhammed, formally welcomed party leaders, NEC members, elders, and stakeholders.
In his address, Muhammed described the meeting as both timely and significant, noting that it marked the party’s first NEC engagement in 2026 amid renewed optimism and institutional clarity.
He commended NEC members and party leaders nationwide for what he termed their “resilience, patience, and adherence to due process,” despite internal disagreements that challenged the party throughout 2025.
According to him, the previous year tested the PDP’s institutional strength, as actions by some members deviated from established party procedures, exposing the party to legal and administrative uncertainties.
“These developments subjected the party to intense judicial scrutiny,” Muhammed said, adding that the PDP ultimately emerged “refined, strengthened, and reoriented” rather than weakened.
He cited the recent judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, which nullified the Ibadan Convention, as a turning point that restored legal certainty to the party’s leadership framework.
The court ruling, he explained, validated the current leadership structure of the PDP, led by himself as Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee and Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary.
Muhammed stressed that the judgment was not an individual victory but one for the party as an institution, reinforcing the supremacy of the rule of law and internal democracy within political parties in Nigeria.
“With this legal clarity, the party is now positioned to proceed with outstanding state and regional congresses and to prepare for a credible, constitutionally compliant national convention,” he stated.
Calling for reconciliation, Muhammed urged party members at all levels to avoid divisive rhetoric and work collectively toward rebuilding trust and unity within the PDP.
“Now is the time to heal wounds, strengthen internal cohesion, and reposition the party as a disciplined and credible alternative capable of contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s democratic development,” he added.
He also acknowledged the contributions of key party leaders, including former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, whom he described as instrumental in defending constitutional order during the period of internal dispute.
Appreciation was equally extended to members of the party’s reconciliation committee and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, for consistently advocating adherence to due process and the rule of law.
The caretaker chairman concluded by assuring NEC members that the PDP remains governed by rules and capable of self-correction, expressing confidence that the party would regain national relevance through unity and constitutional fidelity.
The meeting proceeded with deliberations on key party matters, including congresses, reconciliation efforts, and preparations for future electoral engagements.
