RIBADU WARNS POLITICAL ACTORS AGAINST VIOLENCE, VOTE-BUYING AHEAD OF UPCOMING ELECTIONS
Abuja – The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has issued a stern warning to political actors with violent tendencies and vote buyers ahead of the upcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections and by-elections in Rivers and Kano states.
Speaking at an Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security meeting organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday, Ribadu emphasized that any attempt to disrupt the electoral process would be swiftly addressed by security agencies.
He was represented at the meeting by Hassan Abdullahi, Director of Internal Security at the NSA’s office. Ribadu called on political parties, candidates, and their supporters to maintain decorum and respect the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process.
“Political thugs and individuals with violent dispositions will be identified and restrained before, during, and after the elections, while vote buyers will be traced and apprehended. Any non-compliance will be dealt with severely under the law,” he said.
Ribadu urged citizens, media organizations, civil society groups, and community leaders to take collective responsibility in protecting Nigeria’s democracy.
The NSA also commended INEC and security agencies for their role in ensuring a peaceful Anambra governorship election, noting that the successful conduct of the polls reflected President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to free and fair elections.
Upcoming electoral events include the FCT area council elections, by-elections in Rivers and Kano states, off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti (June 20) and Osun (August 8), and the nationwide voter revalidation and continuous registration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, represented by CP Abayomi Shogunle, assured that adequate security personnel would be deployed to polling stations and high-risk areas to protect INEC facilities, staff, and voters during the elections.
INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan also urged all security agencies to strengthen planning, intelligence gathering, and inter-agency coordination to ensure violence-free elections.
