 SECURITY ALERT RISES AS DEADLY ATTACKS HIT KWARA COMMUNITIES

Security concerns have intensified following a deadly attack on several communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, where scores of residents were reportedly killed by suspected insurgents linked to a Boko Haram faction.

The attack, which affected Nuku and Woro communities, has raised fresh fears over the possible spread of extremist violence into parts of Nigeria’s South-West, as Kwara State shares borders with several states in the region.

Security analysts and local sources describe the incident as one of the deadliest in the area in recent years, underscoring growing threats along forest corridors linking Kwara, Niger, and Kogi states.

The attackers are believed to be members of Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), a jihadist group with historical links to Boko Haram and al-Qaeda affiliates operating in West Africa. The group is suspected to be exploiting forest reserves in the region as hideouts.

Residents reported that armed men invaded affected communities, attacking homes, public facilities, and travellers along key routes. Several houses were set ablaze, while women and children were reportedly abducted during the assault.

In response, security forces were deployed to the affected areas, while federal authorities intensified intelligence assessments aimed at preventing further attacks and containing potential spillover into neighbouring states.

Security experts have repeatedly warned that forested zones across the North-Central region are increasingly being used by armed groups for mobility and concealment, making coordinated inter-agency operations critical.

Nigeria’s military has, in recent months, recorded gains against insurgent groups in other parts of the country, including the elimination of senior Boko Haram commanders during targeted operations. Defence authorities say efforts are ongoing to dismantle terrorist supply routes, disrupt financing networks, and degrade operational capacity across affected regions.

The Federal Government has continued to emphasise collaboration with international partners, including the United States, on intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism training, and surveillance support.

Meanwhile, community leaders and civil society groups in the South-West have called for heightened vigilance, improved intelligence gathering, and sustained security presence along border communities to prevent further violence.

Authorities have urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious movements, as investigations into the Kwara attacks continue.
