UNICEF DONATES BOAT AMBULANCE TO OGUN RIVERINE COMMUNITIES

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has donated a boat ambulance to Ogun State to strengthen emergency response and improve access to healthcare services in riverine and hard-to-reach communities.

The boat ambulance was inaugurated on Thursday at Makun-Omi, in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, by the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, alongside officials of the state government and development partners.

Dr Coker described the intervention as a significant step toward addressing longstanding transportation and access challenges faced by residents of riverine communities, particularly during medical emergencies.

According to her, difficult terrain and reliance on water transport have continued to limit timely access to healthcare services in several parts of the state.

She said the donation aligns with the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s ongoing efforts to strengthen primary healthcare delivery and ensure that residents in remote locations are not excluded from essential medical services.

The commissioner noted that the boat ambulance would provide faster emergency response, improve patient referrals, and help reduce preventable deaths, especially among pregnant women, children, and the elderly.

She added that the intervention supports broader healthcare reforms aimed at improving maternal and child health outcomes, emergency response systems, and grassroots service delivery.

In a welcome address, the Chairman of Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, Adetoye Odunoiki, represented by Olabode Ogunlana, commended both the state government and UNICEF for the initiative.

He described the donation as timely and said it would significantly enhance healthcare access for residents across riverine and coastal communities within the local government area.

According to him, the boat ambulance would reduce delays associated with medical emergencies and strengthen the transportation of patients requiring urgent care.

Speaking on behalf of UNICEF, Mrs Florence Molokwu, a Vaccine Supply and Logistics Consultant with the organisation, reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to supporting quality healthcare services for women and children.

She urged the local government and host communities to ensure proper use and maintenance of the ambulance boat, noting that it would also play a key role in immunisation outreach and other public health programmes.

Representing the host communities, Mrs Aderonke Adekunmisi expressed appreciation to the state government and UNICEF, describing the donation as a critical intervention that would improve emergency response and healthcare delivery in the area.

She called on community members to take collective responsibility for safeguarding and maintaining the facility to ensure its long-term benefits.
