UNSEAL AMOTEKUN OFFICES TO PREVENT KWARA CRIME SPILLOVER, ADELEKE URGES POLICE

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has called on the Nigeria Police Force to lift restrictions on the state’s Amotekun Corps, warning that rising cases of banditry and kidnappings in neighboring Kwara State could spill into Osun if the security outfit remains grounded.

Governor Adeleke made the appeal through a statement signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, highlighting recent security incidents in border communities, including a reported kidnapping in Ora-Igbomina. He noted that the continued closure of Amotekun offices and the detention of top officers had significantly weakened the state’s capacity to respond to emerging threats.

“The Amotekun Corps has developed specialised expertise in handling security challenges, especially in rural and border areas,” the governor said. “Sealing their offices has created a vacuum now being exploited by criminals.”

The governor specifically urged the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to either formally charge the detained operatives over the alleged killings in Akinlalu community or release them, while immediately unsealing the corps’ offices to allow resumption of operations.

Adeleke emphasized that delays in restoring Amotekun’s functionality could endanger rural populations and increase criminal infiltration in Osun. “Closing down Amotekun exposes our people to serious risks. Immediate action is necessary to secure the grassroots,” he said.

The Amotekun Corps has largely been absent from Osun’s security framework following allegations of unlawful killings in the Akinlalu community on September 30, 2025, which resulted in at least three fatalities. Several officers, including the state commander, Adekunle Omoyele, were subsequently arrested and transferred to Abuja.

Governor Adeleke’s intervention underscores the urgency of balancing law enforcement accountability with proactive security measures to protect vulnerable communities.
