AMERICAN OPEN UNIVERSITY LAUNCHES GLOBAL CAMPUS IN IBADAN, PROMISES FUTURE-FOCUSED EDUCATION

American Open University, Nigeria, has officially launched its Global Campus in Ibadan, Oyo State, with a commitment to redefining higher education and bridging the gap between academic learning and workplace demands.

The launch event, held on February 10, 2026, drew academics, industry leaders, regulatory agencies, and community stakeholders. Themed “Future Forward,” the ceremony marked the introduction of a technology-driven, hybrid educational model aimed at preparing students for global competitiveness.

David Seyi Akanbi, President and Founder of the university, highlighted the institution’s mission to replace outdated learning models. “The traditional promise of ‘go to school, get good grades, get a job’ is broken. American Open University is introducing a hybrid system combining digital learning, industry partnerships, and global exposure to make education relevant and employable,” he said.

Partnerships with international technology firms such as Microsoft, Google, and Cisco will provide students with practical skills and global certification opportunities without leaving Nigeria.

In a keynote address, Prof. Francis Egbokhare of the University of Ibadan emphasized the need for educational reform. “Infrastructure exists but is underused. Talent exists but is excluded. Higher education must be redesigned for the realities of our country, not as a copy of foreign systems,” he stated.

The launch also featured remarks from Temitope Akintola, Zonal Director of JAMB, and Toyin Olatayo, Academic Director of UniTES CISCO Academy, both of whom applauded the university’s focus on access, quality, and workforce readiness. Professional bodies, including the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, expressed support for the initiative.

The event signals a new approach to Nigerian higher education, emphasizing skills, employability, and global exposure for students.
