BAUCHI GOVERNOR PRAISES IRAN, CALLS FOR STRONGER TRADE AND AGRICULTURAL COOPERATION

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has described the Islamic Republic of Iran as an important global partner with significant potential for expanded cooperation in trade, agriculture, and industrial development.

The governor made the remarks on Monday in Abuja during activities marking the 47th anniversary of Iran’s National Day, organised by the Iranian Embassy, where he advocated deeper economic and cultural engagement between Nigeria and Iran.

Mohammed noted that Iran plays a notable role in Africa’s international relations and said sustained collaboration could support economic growth and self-reliance. He emphasised the need for countries to learn from shared experiences and best practices that promote development and independence.

Highlighting existing economic engagements, the governor disclosed that an Iranian company is in the process of establishing a major lead and zinc project in Bauchi State, which he said hosts some of Nigeria’s largest deposits of the minerals. According to him, the investment is expected to focus on value addition rather than raw material export.

He also revealed that discussions are ongoing with Iranian investors in the agricultural and livestock sectors, noting that Bauchi’s vast arable land and Iran’s technological expertise could complement each other to improve productivity.

The governor assured prospective Iranian investors of a supportive business environment, stating that Nigeria remains open to partnerships that contribute to sustainable development and job creation.

He extended goodwill messages to Iran on its National Day, expressing optimism that enhanced bilateral relations would benefit both countries at sub-national and national levels.

In his remarks, Iran’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Mahdavi Raja, reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Nigeria, describing the country as a reliable partner for sustainable development and a key focus of Iran’s engagement in Africa.

The envoy highlighted Iran’s progress in areas such as science, technology, healthcare, and industrial production, despite global challenges, and said the two countries share considerable potential for mutually beneficial cooperation.

Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Ahmed, congratulated Iran on the anniversary and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to diplomatic engagement based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and adherence to international law.

Ahmed noted that trade relations between Nigeria and Iran have continued to expand across sectors including agriculture, manufacturing inputs, and consumer goods, underscoring opportunities for further diversification under South-South cooperation.
