WIKE CONFIRMS PLANS TO MARK FCT GOLDEN JUBILEE DURING TINUBU’S THIRD ANNIVERSARY
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Federal Capital Territory alongside activities marking the third anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Wike made the disclosure in Abuja on Wednesday during an engagement with staff of the FCT Administration, organised as part of activities commemorating the territory’s golden jubilee.
According to the minister, a special committee will soon be inaugurated to coordinate preparations for the anniversary celebrations. He added that a commemorative compendium documenting the FCT’s 50-year journey would be unveiled during the event, expected to take place in about three months.
Wike described the milestone as significant, noting that the anniversary coincides with his tenure as FCT minister. He attributed recent progress recorded in the territory to policy support from the Federal Government under President Tinubu.
The minister said infrastructural development in the FCT had improved following the removal of the FCT Administration from the Treasury Single Account (TSA), a move he said made it possible to access funding from commercial banks for capital projects.
According to him, the change enabled the execution of major infrastructure projects across the territory, reversing years of slow development caused by funding constraints.
Beyond infrastructure, Wike said reforms under the current administration had also improved career progression for workers within the FCT Administration, particularly opportunities to attain senior civil service positions such as Permanent Secretary and Head of Service.
He noted that successive administrations had overseen the FCT over the years but said the current framework created conditions for broader institutional growth and staff advancement.
Earlier, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Richard Dauda, said the scale of infrastructural development recorded in the last two and a half years was unprecedented in the 50-year history of the FCT and the authority.
Dauda said several projects inherited from previous administrations at the inception of the current FCT leadership in August 2023 had either been completed or significantly advanced.
He disclosed that nine projects were inaugurated during President Tinubu’s first anniversary in 2024, while 17 projects were inaugurated during the second anniversary in 2025.
According to him, with the number of projects lined up for commissioning during the third anniversary, the total number of inaugurated projects since Wike assumed office could approach 50.
The planned golden jubilee celebration is expected to highlight the FCT’s development milestones, institutional reforms, and infrastructural expansion since its creation in 1976.
