YUSUF BUHARI REFLECTS ON LIFE AFTER POWER, SAYS PUBLIC ATTENTION FADED AFTER HIS FATHER LEFT OFFICE

Yusuf Buhari, son of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, has reflected on the fleeting nature of power and public attention, revealing how interest from the public sharply declined after his father left office and following his eventual passing.

In a personal reflection attributed to him, Yusuf Buhari recounted that shortly after former President Goodluck Jonathan called to congratulate Muhammadu Buhari on his victory in the 2015 presidential election, his family experienced an overwhelming surge in public attention.

According to him, he received as many as 2,000 phone calls daily during the early days of his father’s presidency. The calls reportedly began as early as 4 a.m. and came from a wide range of people, including former classmates, distant relatives, acquaintances, and individuals who had previously worked for the Buhari family.

He noted that some callers gave vague or untraceable reasons for reaching out, prompting his assistant to politely terminate such conversations.

However, Yusuf Buhari stated that the volume of calls reduced significantly after his father completed his tenure and handed over power to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He said daily calls reportedly dropped to about 100 at that point.

The decline became even more pronounced following the burial of former President Buhari, with Yusuf Buhari noting that calls further reduced to around 20 per day, mostly from close family members and business associates.

Reflecting on the experience, he described the silence as a stark reminder of how quickly public attention fades once power is relinquished.

The remarks have since sparked conversations on social media about loyalty, power, and the realities faced by families of public office holders after leaving government.
