APC CRISIS DEEPENS AS ALIA, AKUME FACTIONS UNVEIL PARALLEL BENUE STATE EXECUTIVES

The internal crisis within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State escalated on Tuesday as rival factions loyal to Governor Hyacinth Alia and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, produced parallel state executive committees.

The faction aligned with Akume convened its congress at Eunice Resort along Ankpa Road in Makurdi, where supporters returned the Austin Agada-led State Working Committee during what was described as a non-elective congress.

The gathering was attended by several APC stakeholders, including former Second Republic Senator Jack Gyado, former Minister of State for Health, Professor Iyorwuese Hagher, and Senator Titus Zam. A representative of the Independent National Electoral Commission was reportedly present to monitor the exercise.

Speaking after his re-emergence, Austin Agada thanked party members for what he described as the peaceful conduct of the congress and for renewing the mandate of his executive team. He pledged to promote unity within the party and work towards the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Senator Titus Zam also commended party members for their support and expressed confidence in the faction’s commitment to future electoral contests.

Meanwhile, the faction loyal to Governor Alia held a separate congress at IBB Square in Makurdi, where Benjamin Omale emerged as chairman.

In his acceptance speech, Omale expressed appreciation to party members and pledged to lead with transparency, honesty and fairness. He affirmed his loyalty to the APC and assured members of efforts to foster unity within the state chapter.

Governor Alia, who addressed supporters at the congress, described the ward, local government and state congresses conducted by his faction as peaceful and credible. He urged party members to remain committed to the growth and development of the state and to see their election as a call to service.

The governor also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for their support to the party nationwide.

Earlier, Chairman of the Benue State APC Congress Planning Committee and member representing Ukum/Katsina-Ala/Logo Federal Constituency, Solomon Wombo, commended the conduct of the congress and said measures had been put in place to ensure credible party leadership in the state.

The development underscores ongoing divisions within the Benue APC, with both factions laying claim to legitimate leadership of the state chapter.
