AKURE-OWO HIGHWAY SHUT DOWN OVER RISING INSECURITIES
Residents of Ayede-Ogbese community in Ondo State on Tuesday morning blocked the busy Akure–Owo Expressway in protest against what they described as a surge in kidnapping and killings in the area.
The protesters, who gathered in large numbers at Ayede-Ogbese along the highway, disrupted vehicular movement, leaving commuters stranded for hours. Witnesses said demonstrators carried placards expressing frustration over persistent security threats and the alleged inaction of relevant authorities.
According to reports from the community, the protest was triggered by the recent killing of a farmer who was reportedly attacked on his way to the farm on Monday morning. The incident, residents said, has heightened fear among locals who depend largely on farming and trading for their livelihood.
Community members accused criminal elements of operating freely within the axis, alleging that several cases of abduction and violent attacks have been recorded in recent months. They stated that residents can no longer move freely or carry out daily economic activities without fear of being attacked.
“We cannot continue like this. Our people are being kidnapped and killed. We are no longer safe,” one of the protesters was quoted as saying.
The demonstrators vowed that there would be no vehicular movement along the Akure–Owo corridor until security agencies and government authorities take decisive steps to address the situation.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the Ondo State Police Command regarding the protest or the reported killing. However, motorists were advised to seek alternative routes while awaiting further developments.
Security operatives were reportedly monitoring the situation to prevent escalation and restore order.
More details to follow as the situation unfolds.
