NEC DIRECTS POLITICAL APPOINTEES SEEKING 2027 ELECTIVE OFFICES TO RESIGN BEFORE ON

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed all government officials and political appointees intending to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign from their current positions on or before March 26, 2026, in compliance with constitutional provisions governing eligibility for elective offices.

The commission stated that the directive is in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which requires political appointees seeking elective positions to step down from their appointments within the stipulated timeframe before participating in party primaries.

INEC explained that the requirement is intended to ensure fairness in the electoral process and to prevent the misuse of government positions or state resources during political contests.

According to the electoral body, affected individuals include special advisers, special assistants, commissioners, board members, heads of government agencies, and other political office holders appointed by federal, state, or local government authorities who intend to contest for elective positions in the upcoming election cycle.

The commission noted that compliance with the directive is mandatory for aspirants who plan to participate in party primaries leading to the 2027 elections, emphasizing that failure to resign within the stipulated timeframe could affect their eligibility to contest.

INEC also urged political parties to ensure that all aspirants emerging from their primaries meet the constitutional requirements before submitting their names to the commission for the general elections.

The electoral body reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a credible, transparent, and lawful electoral process, while encouraging stakeholders to adhere strictly to the legal framework guiding Nigeria’s democratic process.

Political analysts believe the directive will likely trigger a wave of resignations among political appointees across federal and state governments who are preparing to seek elective offices in the 2027 polls.

The 2027 general elections are expected to involve contests for the offices of President, Governors, National Assembly members, and State Houses of Assembly, among other elective positions.
