ONDO APC PROCEEDS WITH STATE CONGRESS INVITATION DESPITE COURT ORDER RESTRAINING EXERCISE

The Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reaffirmed plans to hold its 2026 State Congress on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, in Akure, despite an existing court order restraining the recognition and continuation of the party’s congresses in the state.

In a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Alex Kalejaye, the party announced that the congress would take place at the International Culture and Events Center, popularly known as The Dome, Akure, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The statement indicated that the exercise is being conducted in line with the party’s constitution and guidelines for nationwide congresses, as approved by the National Working Committee.

The party invited statutory delegates, critical stakeholders, and leaders to attend the congress. Listed among the special invitees are the Governor of Ondo State and leader of the party, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa; the Chairman and members of the State Executive Committee; all serving and former members of the National Assembly from Ondo State; members of the National Executive Committee; and serving and former members of the Ondo State House of Assembly.

Also invited are the 18 local government party chairmen and secretaries, Women Leaders, Youth Leaders, and Special Leaders; all council chairmen and vice chairmen; members of the South-West Zonal Executive Committee; serving elected councillors; ward delegates; and ward chairmen, secretaries, women leaders, youth leaders, and special leaders across the state. The statement urged members to ensure a successful congress.

However, the party’s announcement comes in contrast to an interim order earlier issued by a Federal High Court sitting in Akure, which restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the APC from recognising or acting on the outcome of previously conducted ward and local government congresses in Ondo State. The court also ordered the party to halt the planned state congress pending the hearing and determination of a motion for interlocutory injunction.

The suit was filed by aggrieved party members who challenged the conduct of the earlier congresses, alleging breaches of constitutional provisions, the Electoral Act 2022, and party guidelines. The court directed all parties to maintain the status quo ante bellum pending further proceedings.

While the court order effectively places a legal question over the legitimacy of any further congress activities, the latest communication from the party’s publicity secretary indicates that preparations for the March 3 state congress are ongoing.

The development highlights a sharp contrast between the judicial directive aimed at suspending the process and the party’s public position reaffirming its readiness to proceed. As of press time, it remains unclear whether the congress will hold as scheduled or whether further legal steps will be taken in response to the court’s ruling.
