KANO ASSEMBLY INITIATES IMPEACHMENT PROCESS AGAINST DEPUTY GOVERNOR AMINU GWARZO OVER ALLEGED FUND DIVERSION
The Kano State House of Assembly has commenced an impeachment process against the Deputy Governor of the state, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, following allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
The impeachment notice was formally presented during plenary by the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Lawan Hussaini Dala, who stated that the action was taken in accordance with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
According to the Majority Leader, the impeachment notice contains several allegations related to Gwarzo’s tenure as Commissioner for Local Government between 2023 and 2024, as well as issues connected to his current role as deputy governor.
Dala informed lawmakers that the allegations include the alleged diversion of local government funds, abuse of office, and other actions considered impeachable under the Nigerian Constitution.
He alleged that while serving as Commissioner for Local Government and overseeing the administration of the state’s 44 local government councils, the deputy governor participated in the diversion of funds allocated for local government operations.
The Majority Leader further claimed that between June 2023 and January 2024, Gwarzo allegedly received a monthly kickback of ₦1.5 million from each of the 44 local government areas in the state. According to him, the arrangement amounted to about ₦66 million every month over a seven-month period, totaling approximately ₦462 million.
Dala said the alleged payments constituted a breach of public trust and undermined public confidence in governance at the local government level.
He also alleged that between February and July 2024, the deputy governor received additional payments from the local government councils under the pretext of executing special assignments.
According to the lawmaker, the payments were said to be ₦3.255 million monthly from each of the 44 local governments, bringing the total to about ₦726 million during the six-month period.
Dala stated that the alleged transactions represent another breach of public trust and violate the principles of transparency and accountability expected of public officials.
He added that the alleged diversion of local government funds and abuse of office amount to a significant breach of constitutional provisions and ethical standards required of individuals occupying public office.
The Majority Leader informed the Assembly that the impeachment notice was endorsed by 38 lawmakers, which satisfies the constitutional requirement needed to initiate impeachment proceedings.
He subsequently urged the Speaker of the House to approve the transmission of the impeachment notice to the deputy governor in line with constitutional procedures.
The development marks the beginning of a formal constitutional process that could determine the political future of the deputy governor, pending further legislative and investigative procedures.
