NEW PARTY EMERGES AS SERIAKE DICKSON QUITS PDP, DECLARES NDC NATIONAL LEADER

Former Bayelsa State Governor and Senator representing Bayelsa West, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, has officially announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and declared his membership of a newly formed political party, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dickson made the announcement during a public address, confirming that he is also the founder of the party and has been appointed its National Leader.

According to him, the creation of the NDC followed a long process of consultations and political engagement aimed at establishing a credible platform for Nigerians seeking an alternative political direction.

The former governor explained that his decision was guided by his conviction that Nigeria must not drift into a one-party state, stressing that joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was never an option for him despite the recent wave of defections by politicians across the country.

Dickson criticised what he described as governance challenges under the current administration, citing concerns over national security, economic management and the welfare of citizens.

He stated that the new party intends to provide an alternative vision for Nigeria’s political and economic development.

“The Nigeria Democratic Congress is a national platform for patriots committed to building a stronger, fairer and more prosperous Nigeria,” Dickson said.

He outlined the party’s key policy priorities, which include strengthening national security institutions to protect lives and property, expanding access to quality education and skills development, and improving healthcare delivery across the country.

Other areas of focus include building a free-market economy with responsible regulation and social protection, promoting industrialisation and local production, modernising agriculture to achieve food security, and expanding employment opportunities across different sectors.

The NDC agenda also emphasises women and youth inclusion in governance, true federalism and devolution of powers, environmental protection, and the development of modern infrastructure, including transportation and energy systems.

Dickson further stated that the party would prioritise public service reforms, judicial independence, a free press, and adherence to democratic norms and the rule of law.

The former governor also addressed speculation about a possible alliance with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating that while he appreciates the party’s stance in defending democratic pluralism, he remains uncertain about its position on several key political and ideological issues.

He noted that his decision to establish and align fully with the NDC was based on the need for a clear and structured political platform that reflects his principles and policy direction.

Dickson, however, expressed respect for leaders of the ADC and said political engagement among democratic actors would continue in the interest of Nigeria’s democratic development.

He concluded by calling on Nigerians who believe in justice, equity and democratic governance to support the new political movement.

According to him, the NDC aims to serve as a platform for citizens committed to building a nation grounded in responsible leadership, shared prosperity and inclusive governance.
