SEN. HENRY SERIAKE DICKSON OF BAYELSA WEST ANNOUNCES DEFECTION, UNVEILS NEW POLITICAL PARTY
Former Bayelsa State Governor and serving Senator, Henry Seriake Dickson, has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the formation of a new political platform known as the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dickson made the announcement during a live press conference, where he formally introduced the new political party and outlined its ideological direction and policy priorities.
The senator explained that the decision to establish the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) was driven by the need to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative political platform that promotes inclusive governance, democratic values, and national development.
During the briefing, Dickson expressed concerns over what he described as the growing dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that Nigeria could gradually drift toward a one-party political system if strong democratic alternatives are not sustained.
According to him, a one-party system would weaken democratic accountability and reduce healthy political competition necessary for national growth.
“I do not believe in a one-party system. Democracy thrives when there are viable political alternatives that give citizens real choices,” Dickson stated during the press conference.
He noted that the newly unveiled Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) would focus on key developmental priorities, including:
Education reform and access
Improved healthcare systems
Women empowerment and political inclusion
Youth participation in governance
Strengthening democratic institutions
Dickson emphasized that the party intends to build a political movement that reflects the aspirations of Nigerians across all regions and social groups.
Senator Dickson is a seasoned Nigerian politician with extensive experience in public service. He previously served as a member of the House of Representatives, Minister of State for Education, and two-term Governor of Bayelsa State before his election to the Nigerian Senate, where he currently represents Bayelsa West Senatorial District.
Political observers say the emergence of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) could introduce a new dynamic into Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, particularly as political realignments continue ahead of future electoral cycles.
Further details about the party’s leadership structure, membership drive, and official registration process are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
