POLICE LAUNCH PROBE AS FIRE KILLS TWO CHILDREN IN ODE-AYE COMMUNITY
A tragic fire incident has claimed the lives of two young children in Ode-Aye, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, prompting an official investigation by the Ondo State Police Command.
According to a statement issued on March 21, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the incident occurred on March 18, 2026, at No. 1 Olaribigbe Street, Zion Area, Ode-Aye.
The victims were identified as Queen Ohwo, aged six, and Everlyne Ohwo, aged four, both daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Ohwo, residents of the affected building.
Police operatives reportedly responded swiftly to the scene, where they conducted preliminary assessments, documented evidence, and evacuated the severely burnt remains of the victims to a health facility in Ode-Aye. The parents of the deceased were said to be in a state of shock following the incident.
Preliminary findings suggest that the fire may have resulted from negligence during cooking activities. However, the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, CP Adebowale Lawal, has ordered a comprehensive and discreet investigation to determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the outbreak.
The Divisional Police Officer in Ode-Aye has been directed to secure the scene, obtain statements from witnesses, and collaborate with the Federal Fire Service to establish the origin and extent of the fire.
The Police Command extended condolences to the bereaved family and emphasized the importance of fire safety awareness among residents.
Authorities advised the public to adopt preventive measures, including avoiding unattended cooking, keeping flammable materials away from heat sources, and ensuring that children are not left unsupervised in environments where fire hazards exist.
Residents were also encouraged to equip their homes with basic fire safety tools and educate household members on emergency response procedures.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging citizens to remain vigilant and safety-conscious at all times.
