TINUBU CRACKS DOWN: POLITICAL APPOINTEES EYEING 2027 POLLS ORDERED TO RESIGN BY MARCH 31

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration who intend to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign their positions on or before March 31, 2026.

The directive, communicated through a circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the upcoming elections.

Those affected by the order include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, as well as directors-general and chief executive officers of federal government agencies, commissions, parastatals, and government-owned companies.

According to the circular signed by the SGF, Senator George Akume, and issued by Permanent Secretary Ibrahim Kana, the directive applies to all categories of presidential political appointees seeking to participate in party primaries or contest for any elective office.

“All affected officials are required to submit their formal resignation letters through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation not later than March 31, 2026,” the circular stated.

The presidency noted that the move is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws, preventing potential abuse of office, and guaranteeing a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the elections.

Tinubu also emphasised the importance of transparency and fairness in the political process, reiterating his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting credible electoral practices in Nigeria.

The directive comes as political activities begin to intensify nationwide following INEC’s release of the 2027 election timetable, with parties expected to commence their primary processes in line with established guidelines.
