ONDO APC DISMISSES CRISIS CLAIMS, SET TO CONDUCT STATE CONGRESS THROUGH CONSENSUS

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State has reaffirmed its readiness to conduct its State Congress on Tuesday, with party leaders insisting that there is no internal crisis capable of disrupting the exercise.

Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, alongside other top party officials, dismissed reports of division within the state chapter, describing such claims as exaggerated and largely driven by social media narratives.

Addressing stakeholders at the party’s state secretariat in Akure on Monday, the governor maintained that the party remains united and peaceful ahead of the congress.

According to him, while disagreements and competing interests are common in political organisations, they should not be misconstrued as conflict. He assured delegates and members of adequate security and a transparent process during the exercise.

Governor Aiyedatiwa commended members of the State Congress Committee for successfully conducting the ward and local government congresses. He acknowledged initial logistical challenges at the ward level due to the large number of wards but noted that the issues were resolved, leading to improved outcomes at the local government stage.

He expressed confidence that the state congress would be conducted in an orderly and successful manner, in line with the party’s established culture of consensus since 2014.

The governor also aligned the state chapter’s approach with the leadership style of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as a proponent of party discipline, orderliness and structured leadership.

The South-West National Vice Chairman of the APC, Isaac Kekemeke, also addressed party stakeholders, stating that the gathering reflected broad representation from the 18 local government areas of the state.

Kekemeke reiterated that the culture of consensus has defined the party’s leadership selection process in Ondo State since its formation in 2014. He noted that only the position of chairman was contested at the party’s inception, while subsequent congresses in 2018 and 2022 were conducted largely through consensus.

He urged members of the National Working Committee panels to disregard reports suggesting internal conflict, emphasising that political differences arising from personal aspirations should not be interpreted as crisis.

On reports of a court order allegedly seeking to halt the congress, Kekemeke said the party had not received any official directive from the national secretariat regarding such an order and would not act based on unverified information circulating online.

Earlier, Chairman of the APC State Congress Committee, Ogonna Obiekwe, stated that the committee was mandated to oversee the election of 36 members into the party’s working committee for a four-year term.

He assured party members that the process would be conducted in accordance with the party’s constitution, the 2026 Electoral Act (as amended), the party’s guidelines and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The committee’s Secretary, Shittu Bamayi, disclosed that accreditation of delegates would commence at 8:00 a.m. at designated centres across the 18 local government areas. Delegates are required to present their party membership slips, with accreditation to be carried out on a local government basis.

He further stated that the congress would be conducted through a voice vote under a consensus arrangement, assuring stakeholders of impartiality and strict adherence to constitutional provisions.

In separate goodwill messages, the Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Olamide Oladiji, as well as party leaders Tunji Abayomi and Omowunmi Olatunji-Ohwovoriole, commended the various congress committees for their efforts and urged party members to accept the outcome of the exercise in the interest of party unity.

The State Congress is expected to produce new party executives who will steer the affairs of the APC in Ondo State for the next four years.
