ONDO COMMUNITY SHUTS DOWN ABUJA HIGHWAY OVER SURGE IN KIDNAPPINGS AND KILLINGS

Residents of Isua Akoko in Ondo State on Wednesday staged a protest over what they described as persistent cases of kidnapping, killings, and destruction of property in the community.

The demonstration took place in Isua, headquarters of Akoko South-East Local Government Area, where protesters barricaded the federal highway passing through the town. The road is a strategic corridor linking the South-West region to northern Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Motorists were left stranded for several hours as vehicular movement was disrupted.

Eyewitnesses said women carried leaves as a symbol of peaceful protest, while youths and other residents displayed placards expressing concern over the deteriorating security situation.

Some protesters accused local authorities of not doing enough to address insecurity in the area. They alleged that cases of abduction and violent attacks had become frequent, creating fear among residents and affecting daily economic activities, particularly farming.

A youth leader who spoke during the protest said residents were frustrated by what they perceived as inadequate security presence. “We are calling on the relevant authorities to strengthen security operations in our community. Our people should be able to go about their lawful activities without fear,” he said.

Other demonstrators alleged that criminal elements were operating within and around nearby farmlands, making it difficult for farmers to access their fields. Some residents also claimed that internal informants might be aiding criminal activities, though no specific individuals were named and these allegations remain unverified.

Women farmers who joined the protest expressed concern over their safety. One of them said the fear of attack had forced many to return from farms earlier than usual, affecting productivity and livelihoods.

The protesters urged the Ondo State Government and security agencies to take decisive steps to restore order and safeguard lives and property. They warned that the protest could continue if urgent action is not taken.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from security agencies regarding the allegations. However, efforts to maintain calm and restore traffic flow were reportedly ongoing.

Residents have called for increased patrols, intelligence gathering, and collaboration between security agencies and community leaders to address the situation.
