2027 ELECTIONS: ADEYEMI BACKS CONSENSUS PRIMARIES, SEEKS END TO MONEY-DRIVEN APC NOMINATIONS

ADEYEMI BACKS CONSENSUS PRIMARIES, SEEKS END TO MONEY-DRIVEN APC NOMINATIONS

A former member of the House of Representatives and aspirant for the Ondo South Senatorial District, Hon. Engr. Janet Febisola Adeyemi, has advocated the adoption of the consensus method in selecting candidates for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Adeyemi, who represented Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo Federal Constituency between 1999 and 2003, said the consensus approach, if implemented with transparency and fairness, could significantly reduce the influence of money in the party’s primary process.

She argued that existing primary systems, particularly indirect primaries, often favour aspirants with substantial financial resources, thereby undermining merit and competence.

Speaking during her declaration for the senatorial race, Adeyemi proposed an interview-based selection mechanism where aspirants would be assessed using clearly defined criteria by an independent panel, free from bias and personal interests.

“If properly conducted with sincerity and objectivity, consensus remains a practical option for ensuring credible leadership selection,” she said.

The APC aspirant also expressed concern over what she described as a weak value system in Nigerian politics, noting that constituents frequently evaluate elected representatives based on financial handouts rather than legislative performance or developmental impact.

On zoning considerations, she maintained that it would be inappropriate for the senatorial seat to be occupied by a candidate from the same zone as the sitting governor, insisting that Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo deserves the opportunity to produce the next senator for Ondo South.

Adeyemi pledged to prioritise development-focused representation if elected, with emphasis on attracting investments and ensuring the district benefits from federal programmes.

Drawing from her experience with the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), she highlighted her expertise in structuring public-private partnership (PPP) projects, noting that such collaborations would be key to driving infrastructure and economic growth in the district.

She further stated that her international engagements in the mining and development sectors have positioned her to facilitate investment inflows into Ondo State through established global networks.

Outlining her development agenda, Adeyemi said she would work to reposition Ondo South as a hub for industrial growth, maritime activities, and agricultural expansion.

She identified the district’s coastal advantage as a major opportunity for boosting maritime trade, fisheries, and port development, which could enhance revenue generation and job creation.

The aspirant also emphasised the need to strengthen agriculture by improving access to modern inputs, financing, and value-chain development, alongside promoting cottage industries to reduce post-harvest losses and stimulate rural economies.

According to her, effective representation at the Senate would involve attracting federal projects, facilitating PPP initiatives, and advocating policies that support infrastructure development, including road networks, power supply, and coastal infrastructure.

She added that the APC faces a strategic decision ahead of the elections—whether to maintain traditional political approaches or present candidates with strong economic competence and forward-looking leadership.
