2027 POLITICS: ADEYEMI ADVOCATES CONSENSUS PRIMARIES, CALLS FOR MERIT-DRIVEN CANDIDATE SELECTION

ADEYEMI ADVOCATES CONSENSUS PRIMARIES, CALLS FOR MERIT-DRIVEN CANDIDATE SELECTION

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and aspirant for the Ondo South Senatorial District, Dr. Janet Adeyemi, has endorsed the consensus mode of selecting party candidates, describing it as a viable approach to reducing the influence of money in Nigeria’s electoral process.

Adeyemi, a former member of the House of Representatives who represented Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo Federal Constituency between 1999 and 2003, made the position known while outlining her vision for political reform and development in the district.

She argued that the direct primary system often gives undue advantage to aspirants with significant financial resources, which, according to her, undermines merit and competence in leadership selection.

According to the APC aspirant, a well-structured and transparent consensus arrangement—anchored on clearly defined criteria—can ensure that the most qualified candidates emerge.

She proposed an interview-style selection process where aspirants would be evaluated objectively by a panel, free from bias, emotional influence, or personal affiliations.

“If properly implemented with sincerity and fairness, consensus remains the most practical option for Nigeria at this time,” she said, emphasizing the need for political parties to prioritize competence over financial strength.

Adeyemi also expressed concern over what she described as a declining value system in Nigerian politics, noting that constituents often assess elected officials based on financial handouts rather than legislative performance and developmental contributions.

On zoning considerations, she maintained that it would be inappropriate for the Ondo South senatorial seat to be occupied by a candidate from the same area as the sitting governor. She therefore advocated for the emergence of a candidate from Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo, which she described as deserving of representation.

Highlighting her experience, Adeyemi said her previous legislative tenure was marked by significant contributions, including the sponsorship of impactful bills. She also pointed to her professional background as an engineer and geologist, as well as her leadership role as President of Women in Mining.

The aspirant further pledged to promote development in Ondo South through public-private partnership (PPP) initiatives. Drawing from her experience with the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), she noted that her expertise would help attract credible investments and ensure the successful execution of infrastructure projects.

“What is often lacking is not vision, but execution. My goal is to bridge that gap by structuring viable projects, attracting investment, and delivering measurable economic outcomes,” she said.

Adeyemi added that her international engagements within the mining and development sectors have positioned her to facilitate investment opportunities for Ondo State, including partnerships linked to global financial institutions.

She urged the APC to consider candidates who can strengthen the party’s reputation for economic competence and forward-looking leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
