FG, ONDO GOVERNMENT MOVE TO VERIFY ₦9.9BN CASH TRANSFER BENEFICIARIES AMID EXPANDED SOCIAL SUPPORT PROGRAMME

The Federal Government and Ondo State Government have commenced steps to validate beneficiaries of the ₦9.9 billion disbursed under the Household Prosperity and Empowerment Cash Transfer Programme, as part of efforts to strengthen accountability and improve delivery of social intervention schemes.

Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, made this known on Monday while receiving the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Mr. Bernard M. Doro, during a courtesy visit to the Governor’s Office in Akure.

The governor emphasised the need for stronger collaboration between federal and state governments in implementing social programmes, noting that effective service delivery depends on coordination with structures closest to the people.

He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the Renewed Hope Agenda initiative, describing the cash transfer programme as a significant intervention aimed at supporting vulnerable households nationwide.

According to Aiyedatiwa, the South-West region has received approximately ₦62 billion under the scheme, with Ondo State accounting for 396,671 beneficiary households across the first, second, and third tranches.

He explained that given the scale of the programme, targeted engagement with selected beneficiaries across the 18 local government areas was being adopted instead of full-scale verification, to gather direct feedback on the programme’s impact.

The governor also highlighted challenges related to National Identification Number (NIN) registration among some beneficiaries, directing relevant authorities to intensify efforts in updating records to ensure seamless payment processes.

Aiyedatiwa further commended the minister’s field-based assessment approach, noting that direct interaction with beneficiaries would enhance transparency and improve programme outcomes.

In his remarks, the minister stated that the visit formed part of a nationwide review of the cash transfer initiative, which has so far provided ₦75,000 in three tranches to vulnerable households across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Doro disclosed that over nine million households have benefited from the programme nationwide, with Ondo State alone receiving about ₦9.9 billion through successive payment cycles.

He, however, raised concerns about low public awareness of the programme despite its wide reach, calling for improved communication strategies to ensure transparency and public understanding.

The minister added that randomly selected beneficiaries in Ondo State would be engaged directly to confirm receipt of funds and provide feedback for policy adjustments.

He noted that the Federal Government is working on a redesigned social protection framework, stressing that grassroots engagement remains essential to aligning interventions with the realities of beneficiaries.

Doro described the ongoing exercise as a data validation process aimed at improving targeting, strengthening accountability, and enhancing the overall effectiveness of welfare programmes across the country.

Senior government officials present at the meeting included the Deputy Governor, Dr. Olayide Adelami; Chief of Staff, Prince Segun Omojuwa; Head of Service, Mr. Bayo Philip; and other key members of the state executive council.
