MAKINDE CAMP BLASTS AWOSIKA, LABELS COMMENTS AS IGNORANT AND POLITICALLY MISGUIDED
The Media Office of Hon. Dr. Abiola Makinde, Member of the House of Representatives, has issued a strongly worded response to comments attributed to Mr. Tola Awosika, rejecting what it described as “fallacies, historical distortions, and political naivety.”
In an official statement released on Monday, the media office said it was compelled to respond despite its usual focus on legislative responsibilities and grassroots empowerment initiatives. It argued that Awosika’s remarks reflected a misunderstanding of democratic processes and the principle of party supremacy in Nigeria’s political system.
The statement challenged Awosika’s reported claim that any renewed political ambition by Makinde would be “dead on arrival,” describing such assertions as unfounded. It maintained that there is no legal or constitutional restriction preventing a serving lawmaker from seeking another term, noting that electoral mandates ultimately rest with party structures and constituents.
Addressing a viral video in which Makinde had earlier indicated he might not return to the House of Representatives, the statement clarified that his political aspirations have been directed toward the Senate. However, it emphasized that such ambitions remain subject to party decisions, stressing the importance of discipline and alignment with party directives.
The media office further dismissed allegations linking Makinde to Awosika’s past senatorial primary defeat, stating that party nominations are determined by delegates and not controlled by any single individual. It argued that political success depends on grassroots engagement and party structure rather than social media influence.
On the issue of balancing public service with private interests, the statement said Makinde’s business engagements abroad are stable and managed independently, allowing him to focus on governance without personal financial pressure.
The statement concluded by urging Awosika to promote unity within the party and adopt a more constructive approach to political engagement.
Rt. Hon. Alli Moshood Abiodun, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Hon. Dr. Abiola Makinde, signed the statement dated April 20, 2026.
