MILITARY PREPARES REINTEGRATION OF OVER 700 FORMER INSURGENTS AFTER REHABILITATION PROGRAMME

The Nigerian military has announced plans to reintegrate more than 700 rehabilitated former insurgents into society following their participation in the Federal Government’s deradicalisation initiative, Operation Safe Corridor.

The Coordinator of Operation Safe Corridor, Brigadier-General Yusuf Ali, disclosed this during a media tour of the Deradicalisation, Rehabilitation and Reintegration (DRR) Centre in Gombe, North-East Nigeria.

Ali said the programme is a structured component of Nigeria’s counter-insurgency strategy, designed to promote peace and stability in communities affected by years of violent extremism. He noted that misconceptions still exist among the public regarding the objectives of the initiative.

According to him, Operation Safe Corridor focuses on deradicalising, rehabilitating and preparing participants for reintegration into civilian life, rather than recruiting them into the military or other security agencies.

He emphasised that the programme provides psychological support, vocational training and civic education aimed at transforming participants into productive members of society.

During the tour, some participants shared personal accounts of their past involvement in insurgent activities and the impact of the rehabilitation programme on their lives.

The media visit was part of activities leading up to the graduation of over 700 participants who have successfully completed the programme and are deemed ready for reintegration into their respective communities.

Operation Safe Corridor remains a key non-kinetic approach adopted by the Federal Government to complement ongoing military operations against insurgency in the North-East region.
