DINO DECLARES CONFIDENCE IN DEFEATING TINUBU, BACKS OPPOSITION COALITION
Former Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye, has expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu can be defeated in a free and fair election, while reiterating his commitment to supporting a unified opposition front ahead of future polls.
Melaye made the remarks during an interview on Mic On Podcast, hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, where he delivered a strong critique of the current administration and outlined his political stance.
Speaking on the prospects of opposition parties, Melaye stated that any presidential candidate emerging from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) would perform significantly better than the incumbent.
According to him, “Any of those interested in the presidency under ADC would do far better than Tinubu. They cannot be worse than the current administration.”
The former lawmaker also declared that he would personally be capable of defeating the President if he chooses to contest, stressing the importance of a credible electoral process.
“In a free and fair election, I am confident I can defeat him,” he said.
Despite his assertion, Melaye clarified that his immediate focus is not on pursuing personal ambition but on supporting a consensus candidate from a broader opposition coalition aimed at unseating the ruling government.
“My priority for now is ensuring that the current administration is voted out. Whoever emerges through a transparent primary or consensus, I will support,” he added.
Melaye also raised concerns about the integrity of the electoral system, alleging that the President may not be inclined to support a transparent process. He emphasized that credible elections remain critical to Nigeria’s democratic development.
On internal coalition discussions, he dismissed speculation about joint tickets, maintaining that the overriding objective is national interest and effective governance.
“We are not focused on joint or non-joint tickets. Our focus is on rescuing the country,” he said.
In addition, Melaye criticised what he described as the growing influence of non-elected individuals in governance, particularly referencing the activities of Seyi Tinubu, the President’s son. He questioned the role of such actors in public administration and called for clearer boundaries in governance structures.
He further noted that opposition figures are already strategising and working towards greater unity ahead of upcoming elections, describing collaboration as essential to achieving political change.
Melaye’s comments come amid ongoing political realignments and discussions around coalition-building among opposition parties as Nigeria gradually approaches another election cycle.
