ONDO POLICE ARREST PROPHETESS, FAKE MIDWIFE OVER DEATHS OF MOTHERS AND NEWBORNS
The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two women in connection with the deaths of two mothers and their newborn babies in separate incidents across the state.
The suspects, identified as Elizabeth Aremu and Blessing Effiong, were apprehended following reports linking them to the tragic occurrences in Akure and Emure-Ile, Owo Local Government Area.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abayomi Jimoh, the cases involved alleged unregulated childbirth practices carried out under questionable circumstances.
In the first incident, reported on April 16, 2026, a complainant identified as Remilekun alerted the police after her brother, Mr. Bawa Lawal, was informed of the death of his wife, Mrs. Bawa Blessing. The deceased had reportedly gone into labour at a private residence in the Gloryland area, off Ado Road, Akure.
Investigations revealed that the residence was owned by Elizabeth Aremu, who allegedly presented herself as a midwife. The victim was said to have developed complications shortly after delivery and died before she could be transferred to a medical facility.
Police detectives who visited the location reportedly discovered the lifeless body of a newborn baby wrapped in a sack. The suspect was subsequently arrested.
In a separate case reported on April 11, 2026, one Augustine Kufre informed authorities that his 20-year-old girlfriend, Genifer Sunday, was taken to a church in Emure-Ile during labour.
The church’s prophetess, identified as Blessing Effiong, allegedly handled the delivery. The newborn reportedly died at the scene, while the mother later died en route to the hospital due to complications.
The police confirmed that both suspects are currently in custody, while investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incidents.
Authorities also stated that the remains of the deceased mothers and their infants have been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital in Akure and the Federal Medical Centre morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The command assured the public that all individuals found culpable would be brought to justice.
It further advised residents to seek medical care only from qualified and licensed healthcare providers, particularly during critical conditions such as childbirth, warning against the dangers of unregulated facilities and untrained practitioners.
