OWỌ BLOW STAR SUNDAY AFOLABI RETURNS TO NOLLYWOOD AFTER STINT AS COMMERCIAL DRIVER

Veteran Nollywood actor Sunday Afolabi, widely recognised for his role in the classic Yoruba film Owo Blow, has made a return to the movie industry following a period away from the screen during which he reportedly worked as a commercial driver in Lagos.

The actor’s comeback was brought to public attention by fellow Nollywood figure Adeniyi Johnson, who shared a photo of Afolabi on a movie set via Instagram on Sunday. The post signalled that the veteran actor has resumed professional acting.

According to Johnson, Afolabi is currently involved in a new film project titled ILEKE, produced by actress Seyi Edun and directed by Adebayo Tijani. In his post, Johnson described Afolabi as a versatile and dedicated actor, noting that he is now available for film projects within and outside Lagos.

Afolabi’s return comes weeks after a video circulated on social media showing him around a Lagos commercial minibus, where he appeared to be assisting passengers—an activity commonly associated with public transport operators. The footage drew widespread reactions, with many Nigerians expressing concern over his condition.

In an earlier interview in 2025, Afolabi reportedly spoke about personal and financial difficulties, including the loss of his wife, which had a significant impact on his life and career. He explained that working in commercial transportation was a practical means of sustaining himself while awaiting acting opportunities.

Afolabi rose to prominence in the 1990s and early 2000s Yoruba film industry, featuring in several notable productions. Over time, his presence in mainstream Nollywood declined as the industry evolved with new talents and changing production styles.

His recent projects include Luwo Gbagida (2025), The Lost Heir (2018), and The Herbert Macaulay Affair (2019), while his last known screen appearance before this return was in the Africa Magic series Itura in 2023.

His reappearance on set has been welcomed by fans and colleagues, many of whom had earlier called for support for the actor following the viral video.
