2027: TINUBU CALLS FOR UNITY, FAIRNESS AS APC BEGINS NATIONWIDE PRIMARIES
TINUBU CALLS FOR UNITY, FAIRNESS AS APC BEGINS NATIONWIDE PRIMARIES
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to maintain peace, unity, and sportsmanship as the party commences its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued from the State House on Thursday, the President described the commencement of the primaries as a significant milestone in the history of the ruling party, noting that the APC is preparing for its fourth election cycle since its formation.
Tinubu said the APC was founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, selflessness, and sacrifice, stressing that those ideals have remained the foundation of the party’s electoral successes over the years.
“The primary elections are not mere exercises to produce our standard bearers. They are a referendum on our unity, resilience and strength as a party,” the President stated.
The APC primaries are scheduled to begin with the House of Representatives contests and conclude with the party’s presidential primaries on May 25, 2026.
The President acknowledged ongoing efforts by party leaders to produce consensus candidates in line with the Electoral Act and the APC constitution, describing the move as a commendable step capable of reducing internal disputes and fostering party cohesion.
He, however, noted that where consensus arrangements fail, all aspirants and delegates should approach the contests peacefully and democratically.
“Election is an essential ingredient of democracy. Where consensus fails, I urge us all to go into the primaries as brothers and sisters,” Tinubu said.
The President cautioned against divisive politics and urged winners of the primaries not to celebrate excessively, while encouraging unsuccessful aspirants to embrace sportsmanship and continue supporting the party.
“Our opponents are waiting for us to be against each other; we should disappoint them,” he added.
Tinubu also appealed to victorious candidates and party leaders to reconcile aggrieved members after the primaries by extending “olive branches” to those who may not emerge successful.
He emphasized that politics should not be treated as a “do-or-die affair” and reiterated the importance of fairness and transparency throughout the exercise.
Addressing party leaders, governors, and stakeholders, the President urged them to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants.
“You must rise above sentiment to offer all aspirants a level playing field that guarantees participation without let or hindrance,” he stated.
Tinubu further stressed the need for greater inclusion of women and youths in the political process, describing them as critical demographics that should not be sidelined during the primaries.
“The inclusion of women and youth is dear to my heart,” the President said, while appealing to delegates and party leaders to give them special consideration during the contests.
On security arrangements, Tinubu directed the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to remain neutral and professional throughout the primary elections.
“Your duties strictly centre on ensuring peaceful exercise. Nothing more,” he warned.
The President concluded by wishing all aspirants and party members a successful outing and expressed optimism that the party would emerge stronger ahead of the general elections.
