JONATHAN EMERGES AS PDP’S SOLE PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRANT AHEAD OF 2027 SCREENING

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has reportedly emerged as the sole presidential aspirant under the Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to a statement issued by the faction on Sunday, the party has scheduled its screening exercise for Tuesday as part of preparations for the forthcoming primaries and nomination processes nationwide.

The statement disclosed that screening for aspirants seeking various elective positions will commence by 10 a.m., with thousands of party hopefuls expected to participate.

Figures released by the party indicate that 2,122 aspirants are contesting for seats in state houses of assembly, while 748 aspirants are seeking House of Representatives tickets. In addition, 198 aspirants are contesting for senatorial positions, while 112 governorship aspirants are expected to undergo screening.

The party also confirmed that only one aspirant is expected for the presidential screening exercise, although the statement initially withheld the identity of the contender.

However, sources within the party later identified former President Goodluck Jonathan as the sole presidential aspirant cleared for the process.

Efforts to obtain official comments from the PDP faction’s spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, were unsuccessful as of the time this report was filed.

The development has generated fresh political discussions within the opposition party as preparations for the 2027 elections continue to gather momentum across the country.

Reports indicate that the presidential screening committee consists of 14 members drawn from notable PDP leaders and elder statesmen.

Members of the committee reportedly include former Vice President Namadi Sambo, former Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang, former Minister of Foreign Affairs Tom Ikimi, PDP chieftain Olabode George, and former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu.

Other members are Maryam Ciroma, Zainab Maina, Josephine Anenih, Abdul Bulama, Esther Uduehi, Tony Aziegbemi, Sunday Solari, and Anicho Okoro, who is expected to serve as administrative secretary.

According to the statement, the composition of the committee received approval during a recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the faction.

“This publication is in accordance with the party’s guidelines and timetable for the conduct of the 2027 general election,” the statement noted.

Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president between 2010 and 2015, remains one of the prominent figures within the PDP and the broader African political landscape.

His possible return to active presidential politics is expected to shape political conversations and alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
